The 5 Star and 4 Star Asymmetrical Muzzle Brake

I have shot a multitude of muzzle brakes and have a list of certain desired results.

1.    Recoil Reduction. It’s certainly important but not the only parameter of importance.

2.    The ability to stay on target is high on my list. The asymmetrical design helps achieve this. The ports are designed for counter-torsional gas dispersion as the top set of ports on the brake’s (4 Star or 5 Star) left side are swept up to counteract the torque of the barrel when fired. (You’ll stay on target much easier). 

3.    The tuneability of an adjustable brake is also suitable for achieving desired barrel harmonics. The user will find a couple of “sweet spots” which yield tighter groups. Start with the Brake screwed on all the way on. Shoot a test group then move out 1 revolution and shoot another test group. Repeat for a total of 7 test groups.

  
4.    Being able to comfortably use the 4 Star and 5 Star muzzle brakes with either a set of ear plugs or a set of earmuffs is important.  Brakes which blow the gas to the rear require the user to use both plugs and muffs. 

5.    A brake whose ports are positioned to not disturb the ground (no dirt blown on the shooter or a competitor next door).

6.    While I feel that a brake for a 50gr powder capacity case only needs 3-4 ports to be effective (i.e. the 4 Star brake), a 80 grain or larger capacity case will effectively utilize all the ports of a 5 Star brake. 

The 4 Star and 5 Star brakes accomplish all these parameters. 

The 5 Star brake will screw on a ¾ X 24tpi X .650” barrel thread with a square shoulder. It comes pre-drilled (.275”) to accommodate a 6mm or smaller caliber.   

The 4 Star brake will screw on a 5/8 X 24tpi X .650” barrel thread with a square shoulder. It comes pre-drilled (.253”) to accommodate a .224 or small caliber. 

SSS will open either brake for a larger caliber upon request for $15.

Both the 4 Star and 5 Star brakes are supplied with an integral locking nut. All parts are made of 416 stainless steel. Available in stainless or with a black finish.

Start your group testing with the brake screwed all the way onto the muzzle threads. Measure using dial calipers from the front of the brake to the back of the nut and record for each test revolution.   This will help reaquire the setting that works best for you.
