Installation, page two

This is optional as installation of the extractor with none of the bolt face modifications outlined will in no way affect the utility of the rifle or effectiveness of the part. These are, in our opinion, strictly cosmetic.

Bolt Face Options

You may leave the bolt face in its original state, but the undercut from the original extractor will leave the front rim around the bolt face not fully supported. For a better, more professional looking job it is worth your time and effort to eliminate this groove. There are several ways to do this and the work should be done before beginning any other machine work. Three common methods that work well are:

1. Begin your project by selecting an action that has the next smallest bolt face. This is likely the best option, but only applicable if you are rebarreling the rifle. For instance, if you are building a .308, start with an action and bolt for the .223. When you bore out the bolt face to accept the larger case head you will eliminate the undercut. Of course, you may also have to change other parts such as the magazine box, too.

2. You can fill the undercut with a steel-filled epoxy such as Brownells Steel Bed™. This works well and is very durable so long as you remember to properly prepare the metal so the epoxy will adhere.

3. You can bore the bolt face to an oversized dimension to eliminate the undercut and fit a bushing you have turned in the lathe. This bushing can be installed using soft solder such as Brownells Hi Force 44™ or epoxy. This method can be used to reduce the bolt face if you wish to convert a bolt from a belted magnum to a standard cartridge, such as rebarreling a 7mm Magnum to a .30-06.
